You may have heard that February is National Library Lovers Month.
What you probably didn’t realize is that here in Las Vegas, we have a lot to love!
Did you know that the 13 urban and 11 rural branches of the Clark County Library are open 7 days a week, and host free wi-fi that stays on 24/7?
How about that the Clark County Library system is rated 15th in public libraries by size of population served. What does that mean? It means that the library spends $4.77 per person for books and other media, whether they go to the library, or not. With over 2 million people in Clark County, that’s a lot of books! (Over 2.7 MILLION items at last count!)
But our library is more than just a place to check out a book or two. Here’s a great list of everything else our local library system has to offer:
Did you know that your local library also has movies? You can spend some time catching up with the sliver screen, or check out one of the new releases in their collection. Chances are, if you can find it in Redbox, you can get it at the library. All it takes is a membership card! Cutting the cable cord is a little easier knowing that the card also gives you access to Hoopla, a streaming service that’s home to movies, television shows, audio books, and even music!
Speaking of music, having a Clark County library card also allows you to stream music through both Hoopla and Freegal Music. That means that whether you listen to Classical or Classic Rock, Children’s Music or Country, being a member gives you access to a musical style that fits you!
Looking for help with Reading, Writing, or Math? What about English as a 2nd language? Sign up for one of the free courses held at your local library. They also have Citizenship classes.
Word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing programs are available for you to use by appointment, as well as access the Internet. There are also a number of resume and job help resources available. Looking for something for your son or daughter to do while you do a recipe search, or tighten up that resume? Children can play Minecraft Education for free!
The LearningExpress library has practice tests and courses in a lot of different areas. These include Real Estate, SATs, Civil Service, and even GED. Taking practice test ahead of time are a great way to get prepared for the real thing. There is also a learning center to help you find the job that’s right for you!
Trying to find the perfect place for that meeting of the minds? Maybe you have a group that needs to host a get together. For a small fee, most of the branches have conference and meeting rooms that can be rented by the hour. Thinking of a larger event, like a recital? 6 of the locations even have auditorium or performing arts facilities!
Each library overs a plethora of daily programming that is free of charge for adults and children. These programs include movies, health workshops, storytelling, historical lectures, author visits, dance and music performances and many more. All programs are free to the public and do not require a membership card.
Are you a fan of the arts? Many of the libraries have a public gallery space that have rotating art displays, often displaying art from local artisans.
Did you know that once you become a member, you never have to leave the house? With the large list of databases for adults and children as well as e-books via Overdrive, downloadable/streaming videos through Hoopla and downloadable music content via Freegal, there’s sure to be enough to keep you and your family busy for years! And all of the online resources are free with your library card which is also free for a first time account holder.
Show our Clark County Library system some love, and go visit one with the family this week. You can find the closest location to you right here.
