Help Zappos Save Roos N More

If you haven’t herd already on our Facebook page, Roos N More was closed down late last month after the health department said the residential bathrooms on the property did not meet the requirements for the facility.  The closer had nothing to do with Roos N More‘s animal care or upkeep.  The county has since allowed Roos N More to open for private tours only.  At about five tours a week, director Valerie Holt said that is only enough to cover food for the animals and employee salaries.

“It really doesn’t make a dent. We’ve had a lot of people asking us, you obviously make a ton of money doing this. And I’m like no, we lose money every day, We do it for the love,” Roos-N-More Director Valerie Holt said.  So far the group has raised $15,000 toward that goal.  “Obviously the support and a lot of people going we don’t want the zoo to go away has been pushing us to keep struggling,” Holt said.

One of the big fundraisers Roos N More has coming up is next weekend (Feb 15th, 2014) at Zappos in Downtown Las Vegas from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  “Basically we are going to bring 40 to 50 animals down to Zappos and basically set up the zoo there,” Holt said.  Even as they plan more fundraisers, the group is learning the cost of the construction could double, because of new regulations and increased estimates from contractors.

“From what he saw, and the size he was anticipating, and the fact they want it made out of block. He said we are looking at $300-400,000 plus,” Holt said.

While Holt said the cease and desist was a mixed blessing, she is still confident that the community will continue to step up and help support the zoo.
