On August 14, 2017 most students in Las Vegas and Henderson will begin a new school year. The first day of school is an annual memory that can be marked with fun traditions. Whether your students are starting preschool, heading to college, or starting a new year of home-based education, marking the day with festivities makes for extra special memories.
Before school starts, plan a special back-to-school date with your child to purchase school supplies and clothing. Include a special meal or treat and enjoy having some quality time with that child.
At the District: Choose from more than 15 dining options including Lyfe Kitchen, Settabello, or the newly opened Shake Shack. If new clothes are on your list don’t forget to stop by Gymboree, Janie & Jack, and the local-mom owned shop, Fashions and Fairytales to outfit your little scholar. Parents and teachers can refresh their style too. Shop Down East Basics, Anthropologie, Jos A. Bank, and REI or one of the many other retailers and boutiques.
School Year’s Eve
We mark the beginning of the new year with special celebrations, countdowns, and parties, so why not mark the new academic year with the same fanfare! Plan a Back-to-School Eve party with family and/or friends to celebrate new beginnings. Decorations, party horns, count downs, balloons, and even back-to-school movies are appropriate for this occasion. End the day with a special bed time routine and a back-to-school themed book.
Back Pack Fairy
This fun tradition, sometimes called the back-to-school fairy or the Magic School Bus, is especially fun for younger kids, but no one is immune to the magic of school supplies. Plan a night where you can fill your child’s back pack or leave a basket of school supplies, an encouraging note, fun snacks, and more to help get them excited for the new year.
At the District: Pick up hand sanitizer, lip balms, and functional holders for both at Bath & Body Works. Surprise your child’s teacher with a special hand soap or hand sanitizer as a reminder that you can always lend a hand. See this fun printable from Skip to My Lou.
Back to School Bracelets
A new year can bring lots of emotions and some children need extra reassurance when away from home. This idea is one of my favorites and one we plan to implement this year as my children embark on new adventures.
Sidewalk Chalk Messages
What fun to walk out the front door and see a message along your driveway! Greet your child with cheerful inspiration this year.
Pro Tip: Write the message the night before, it might be dark but it’s much cooler and will save you time on a hectic morning.
First Day of School Photos
There is no better tradition (in my opinion) than the first (and last) day of school photos. Keep it simple with a snap shot or go big with chalkboard and printed signs, but no matter what you do grab a shot of that big smile as your child enters a new chapter.
At the District: Pottery Barn has fantastic chalk boards that are perfect back-to-school photos. My favorite is this one that is part of the modular system. This chalk board works well for photos and then can be hung on your wall for notes, menus, and more.
After School Treat
Ending the first day of a new school year with a special treat is rewarding for everyone. Taking the extra time out from the busy day and allowing your child to wind down while you listen to every detail of their new adventure is something not to miss. Our family tradition is always a frozen treat. Make your own tradition at a special place or enjoy the special time at home around your own kitchen table.
At the District: Enjoy ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s, a fresh smoothie from Rachel’s Kitchen, or sit down a share a slice of cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. Enjoy your treat and then splash the day away at the splash pad on Main Street.
Water Bomb the Bus
Be the fun mom and greet your children at the bus stop with a bucket of water balloons. No bus, no problem, have them ready at the front door when you get home with a note to prepare them for battle. Want a less messy option, use Nerf guns to welcome your children through the front door! Make sure to play fair and have one ready for them too.
Whether your sad to send your little one off, glad to have some time alone, or just wanting to catch up with some other adults, the first day of school is the perfect time to plan it. Gather your mom (or dad) friends at a coffee shop or restaurant and spend some quality time together. Another way to enjoy the day (and your new found freedom) is to have lunch with your partner. Parents needs time together too.
At the District: Plan a coffee date at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, gather the girls and work out together at Cyclebar, or sit down and enjoy brunch or lunch at any one of the more than 15 restaurants.
The District at Green Valley Ranch is home to more than 70 shops, restaurants, salons, and offices. Providing family entertainment with its line up of events, it’s easy to spend an entire day shopping, dining, and enjoying each other.
Through the end of August, gather on Friday and Saturday evenings for the Summer Concert Series.
