Take a First Day Hike on January 1, 2024

Start a new tradition and take a First Day Hike with your family on New Year’s Day.

On New Year’s Day, America’s State parks will once again celebrate First Day Hikes. These hikes provide a means for individuals and families to welcome the new year in the outdoors, exercising and connecting with nature. For many it has become a tradition.

First Day Hike at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

These Hikes are 1 1/2 miles on rocky, uneven ground. Some steep steps in the beginning of hike. Hike crosses a spring outflow and has an elevation gain of about 500 ft. There are no restrooms on the trail.

Weather in January can be cold or even rainy. Please dress in layers appropriate for the weather, bring water, wear sturdy shoes that can and will get dirty.

First Day Hike at Valley of Fire State Park

Valle of Fire State Park has First Day Hikes happening throughout the day that do not require reservations.

CLICK HERE to see all the available hikes.

Some great hikes to do with kids:

10am – 11am Petroglyph Canyon to Mouse’s Tank : (1 mile)
See petroglyphs and learn about native plant life as we take a casual hike.
Meet at Mouse’s Tank Trailhead

1030am—1230pm Duck Rock Petroglyph Loop : (3 miles)
Hike an unofficial trail to duck rock and see petroglyphs along the way.
Park at the gate near the northernmost curve of the road before White Domes Loop (Only park in pullouts)

11am—1230pm White Domes Loop : (1.5 miles)
This hike has some rock stairs, remains of a movie set, and a slot canyon.
Meet at White Domes Loop Trailhead

Starting off the 1st day of the year with a hike is a great way to kick off time together. If you can’t make it to one of our local state parks, pick any local hike and set out to spend some time outside.

Here are some ideas for hikes you can do with your family:
